Luverne, Alabama: the friendliest city in the South.

I live for moments like this.

For those of you who got one of my 2020 calendars, you’ll see that March features a big old brick wall painted with an old Pepsi ad!

About a year ago, I found myself mindlessly following my GPS through Alabama, as I drove to Florida for a conference. I found myself on the darkest, loneliest stretch of roadway for my last two hours heading into Defuniak Springs.

When the GPS announced the next turn I needed to make, I turned onto one of the most inviting little streets I ever saw! I live for moments like this and quickly pulled the van over to get some photos. It was pretty late and no one was around, so I didn’t want to spend too much time roaming the streets. But I was able to get a few photos of some really unique parts of downtown Luverne, Alabama… “The Friendliest City in the South”… though I can’t confirm that since there wasn’t a soul in sight.

Luverne, AL is a small town with a population of about 2800 and is the county seat of Crenshaw County, AL. What stood out the most in the 20 minutes I spent there were all the Pepsi signs! It turns out that Luverne is home to one of Pepsi’s bottling companies since 1915, distributing Pepsi brand drinks to its local community.

So this Coke brand loyalist put her bias aside and snapped some photos that show the pride these small shop owners take in being a “Pepsi” town. Take notice of the one shop that dared to put a Coke sign up, the beauty of the painted exterior walls, and those cozy string lights across the street. I hope you enjoy the photos because I enjoyed every moment of taking them!
