A Postcard History… Bethlehem, PA

Postcard Flashback, Bethlehem, PA

Many years ago, I acquired a postcard collection that was started by my grandmother and continued by my mother. Today, I keep adding to this collection, and I decided I'm going to start pulling some out to share from places I've visited. It's fun to see how these towns looked so long ago. Most of the work I do, while I'm traveling and photographing, is driven by the nostalgia I feel when I visit these great towns across the country. I'm also inspired to visit places that I find on these old postcards. I'm looking forward to sharing those adventures with you, too!

Aside from the beautiful pictures on these postcards, I am always entertained by the short, yet meaningful messages that sometimes cover the backside of the card. I love seeing the beautiful cursive handwriting (even if it is difficult to read sometimes), and I try to take myself back in time, wondering what life was like for the writers and recipients. On the first postcard (dated July 1953), you learn that "everyone is fine but Roseann; she's got an awful cold." Most importantly though, "the baby is home, love to all." I hope you enjoy these old snapshots of Bethlehem, PA from a different era.

When you think about it, Instagram (or any social platform, really) is kind of like the modern-day postcard. My hope is to somehow merge the old with the new... and maybe, just maybe, get people to start sending more postcards from the places they visit. I know I'd love to get some! If you're so inclined, please send them to the address below, and I'll share them right here!

Bethlehem, Pennsylvania was January's feature in my "Pennsylvania Towns" calendar. I found a few more pictures of this pretty town by digging deep into the photo vault.

While my intention for this shoot was to get night photos during the holiday, I would now like to return to photograph the action in town during a warm summer day. It's true, this is one of the top towns to visit at Christmastime, but don't miss out on all that Bethlehem has to offer during the rest of the year. I heard that Restaurant Week just got started there yesterday!

I still have a few 2023 calendars available! Send an email to marjorie@destinationmain.com if you'd like to purchase one.
